 2009 PINSTRIPE POWER SEASON PREVIEW

OPENING DAY ROSTER

Player                            Position(s)           Comments

Jorge Posada                 C                           Got him late (16th round). Hoping to get 9th round production.

Mark Teixeira                 1B                         Not a bad trade up from Ben Sheets.

Robinson Cano               2B                         Still only 26. Should return to keeper level performance.

Derek Jeter                   SS                         10th round?!?! .320 AVG, 120 runs, 30 SBs is probable from leadoff spot.

Alex Rodriguez              3B                         He may be out till May, but I will enjoy him and his narcissism till 2014.

Melvin Mora                   3B                         .376, 12 HR, 56 RBI in 186 Post-All Star ABs in 2008. Excellent ARod filler.

Jermaine Dye                 OF                         100 runs, 30+ homers, 100+ RBI is expected

Hideki Matsui                 OF                         Starts season as Yankees cleanup hitter. 100+ RBI are a lock when healthy.

Jermaine Dye and Melvin Mora are honorary Yankees on my squad.

Brett Gardner                OF                         Will steal 40 bases as a rookie. May catapult to #2 on “Man Crush” list

Lastings Milledge           OF                         Could turn in a 25hr-40sb season, or could hit waivers in May

Denard Span                  OF                         Twins leadoff hitter could be next Carl Crawford, or next Jerry Owens.

Travis Snider                  OF                         Could be next Ryan Braun, or next Alex Gordon

Plenty of OF options with upside, all I need is 1 or 2 to click

Brandon Inge                 C/3B/OF               155 games played at 3B/DH. They all can be used at C. (3 HR after 3 games!)

Emmanuel Burris            2B/SS                    30 steals ain’t bad from your backup 2B and your backup SS.

Mark Teahen                  1B/2B/3B/OF        Mark DeRosa 2008 =Mark Teahen 2009.

Inge/Burris/Teahen completely backup every position on my squad (valiantly)

CC Sabathia                   SP                         17 wins. 200 Ks….not including playoffs and World Series (9+ Ks/9IP)

Scott Kazmir                  SP                         Could easily step into top 8 SPs in baseball. (9+ Ks/9IP)

Joba Chamberlain          SP                         see Scott Kazmir comment (9+ Ks/9IP)

Chien-Ming Wang           SP                         17 wins…low Ks, but that’s what the Big 3 are for

Andy Pettitte                 SP                         15-17 wins. Great Clubhouse presence.

Lots of Ks. Lots of Wins.

Armando Galarraga        SP                         Could put up studly #2 starter numbers in 2009.

Phil Hughes                    SP                         22 years old. Could put up studly #2 starter numbers.

Clay Buchholz                SP                         24 years old. Could put up studly #2 starter numbers.

Rick Porcello                  SP                         20 years old. Could put up studly #2 starter numbers.

Who will be the next Lincecum? Speculating on young, future ace/keepers

Mariano Rivera               RP                         Best closer in 2009. Best closer in Baseball History (9+ Ks/9IP)

Frank Francisco              RP                         30-35 saves. Noone to challenge him. (10+ Ks/9IP)

Joel Hanrahan               RP                         30-35 saves. Noone to challenge him. (9+ Ks/9IP)

Ryan Franklin                 RP                         Could shank closer job. 30 saves? Waiver wire in mid April?

Current squad is a lock for 100 saves. You know I will add another Closer at some point.

If we did keepers back then, how many keepers would I have had on my team?

I estimate at least 12.

2002: I got “stuck” drafting Schilling because Jeter was stolen from my clutches.

Perturbed by the situation, Jeter batted a mere .297 for Stoner Southpaws.

Schilling went on to win 23 games with a 3.23 ERA and 316 Ks.

2004: Tie between A-Rod ( .286, 112 R, 36 HR, 106 rbi, 28 sb) and Mariano (1.94 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 53 saves)

2005: Hitter: A Rod (MVP)= (.321 avg, 124 runs, 48 homers, 130 RBI, 21 SB)

SP: Clemens (Cy Young)= (1.87 ERA over 211 innings is reminiscent of Koufax, B. Gibson of late 1960’s) (at 43 years old!)

RP: Mariano (Fireman of the Year)= (43 saves, 7 wins, 1.38 ERA, .87 WHIP)

2006: Jeter (should have been AL MVP) = .343 Avg, 118 runs, 14 HR, 97 RBI, 34 SB

2007: Matt Holliday: .340 AVG, 120 runs, 36 HR, 137 RBI, 11 SB

2008: Mariano Rivera : 39 saves (97.5%), 1.40 ERA,  0.67 WHIP…better than “KRod”

Finest Moment:

Winning the league by a record 22 points in 2001

Worst Moment:

Watching Ugueth Urbina blow the save in the 163rd game of the year, dropping me from 2nd place to 3rd place in 1999

Best Trade:

April 8, 2001. Barry Bonds is off to a slow start (after 6 games= .125 avg, 1 HR, 1 RBI). I trade Mariano Rivera, Carlos Beltran, and Carlos Lee for Bonds and some scrubs. Bonds goes on to hit another 72 homeruns. Josh squanders the 3 future keepers that he gets from the deal in bad trades.

Worst Trade:

2006: To improve position flexibility, I trade away an underachieving Justin Morneau (1B) for an over achieving Pedro Feliz (1B, 3B, OF) . Morneau would immediately light on fire for the rest of the season and win the AL MVP..
